  • Shhh Scientists are Debating!
  • Sir, I'd have to disagree as Francis Westall and Andre Brack once said, there are as many definitions of life as there are people trying to define it.
  • Living things have certain traits: like metabolism, reproudction, stimulus, organised cells, growth, genetics, evolution, and homeostasis
  • The Eight Characteristics of Life!
  • Am I living?
  • 1. Metabolism - A process you body uses to break down substances into energy. 2. Reproduction - Process where asexual or sexual reproduction has offspring. 3. Stimulus - Something that produces activity/reaction in something else. 4. Organised - Compents inside a cell and how they are arranged. 5. Growth - Increase in size, amount, or volume. 6. Genetics - The study of heredity.7. Evolution - Process of change and develop over long periods of time.8 - Homeostasis - Chemical reactions inside the body, to maintain equalibrium.
  • Of course you are living, you apply to most of the characteristics of life, even though you are not all of them you are still living!
  • So .. How does it work??
  • You don't have metabolism. you can reproduce with the help of me replicating you. When you come in contact with me you have stimulus. You have little to no cells, but I give you mine. You grow with replication, you have DNA and RNA inside of you already, you evolve into different varients, and you don't really have homeostasis.
  • I'm still confused..
  • Well, it's simple, you travel inside of me. Then, you take control of me and I help you to live.
  • Uh.. HELLLOOO.. Example please?
  • Here are some examples:Metabolism: Body breaking down food and replenshing your energy.Reproduction: Two parents have offspring.Stimulus: Eyes dialate to adjust to the light. Organised: Tissues have organs and organs make up systems like the skeletal, and muscular system.Growth: A child will be small and then grow tall into an adult.Genetics: A boy has blonde hair like his mom, and girl has blue eyes like her dad.Evolution: Birds beaks change over long periods of time to adust to their living conditions.Homeostasis: Healthy blood pressure is an example of homeostasis.
  • But you don't perform all of the characteristics?
  • Even though I do not have metabolism, organised cells, and homeostasis to myself it doesn't matter. Dormant seeds don't have metabolism and they are still alive. Seeds have a protective coat to help them resist change in their environment, etc.
  • So... Am I Alive?
  • Overall, I believe that viruses are alive. Whether they meet all the requirements or not it doesn't matter. Their are not restrictions against using one living thing to be living yourself. We humans depends on the resources of our world to live our lives. Viruses are alive, and we should accept that.
  • Oh... I get it
