Isabel Moreno sat down inserting papers into a folder. She had been aat Gateway Nature Center's office all morning and was weary of filing. She wanted to work with the animals, especially the injured birds that the center rehabilitated. She knew more about birds then anyone else their. She was convinced she deserved to work with the birds,
Amy Jensen had been a volunteer a bit longer than Isabel and strutted around like she owned the place. She seemed as if she liked being the boss of other people.
Isabels mother rushed in with Mr. Garza the custodian saying "The hurricane forecast for Miami has skewed to the south and is entering the Gulf. We should be okay in the inlet. After a while there is a change of plans the winds become worse than they were before.
In order to stay safe they close the shutters down in the aviary in hopes to keep the birds safe. Isabel leaped to her feet in excitement of an oppurtunity to help the birds!
They end of getting stuck with a flood coming and the bridge they use to leave, flooded. Isabel was unnerved that both Mr. Garza and Amy seemed so panicked, after considering the problem she said calmly. "We should move the birds to higher ground ." The storm had filled the entire Gulf by then.
Just think about the birds Isabel said as they carried each cage up to the reptile house. Amy watched in awe of Isabel's soothing voice to the animals. Amy tried to mimic it. Mr. Garza said what Isabel did saved the birds. Mrs. Moreno gazed at her daughter admiringly. All Isabel could think about was how scared they must have been in the cages and I just took charge! |Im proud of you Mrs. Moreno says Isabel responds saying I guess I am proud of myself!
