The weights have a large mass, which makes a strong gravitational force. Therefore they are hard to lift off the ground.
Now it all makes sense! All it's gonna take is me getting stronger.
Sam is struggling to lift the heavy weights off of the ground, but he doesn't understand why. He just expects the weights to lift easily without much work put into it.
Why is this paper towel so hard to write on?
That's because paper towels are rougher than a normal piece of paper!
Once Erika comes into the gym with Sam, she explains to him what is going on. The mass of the weights is what makes it so difficult to lift them up. The large mass pulls them back towards the earth.
This is so much easier!
Joey was given a paper towel to experiment the force of friction. He doesn't quite understand why it seems to be harder to write on a paper towel than a normal piece of paper.
Joey's teacher gives him a piece of notebook paper to complete his experiment. He realizes that different surfaces make it easier/harder to write on. The force between the pencil and paper towel is stronger so it is harder to write, whereas the force is not as strong between the notebook paper and the pencil.
The friction between the pencil and paper make it easy/hard to write!
