  • On June 1st, 1792, Kentucky enters into the US as a slave state and Vermont enters as a Slave state. In 1803, President Jefferson made the Lousiana Purchase, gaingin land that would eventully turn into new states.
  • In 1807 the slave trade was abolished making it so that no new slaves could legally enter into the US. Taking one step closer towards all slaves being free. This ment that no new slaves could be brought in but trade still occured illegally. This was the first step towards freedom.
  • During the war of 1812, fouth among Nepolean, James Madison, and King George 3rd both the Britsh and the Us offered Slaves freedom if they helped in the war. This lead to many more free northern states. Making congress and the senate equally represented from both North and South.
  • In 1821, Missouri applied to become a state. This was a problem because they wanted to become a slave state but this worried the north because it would give the southern states an advantage in the congress and senate.
  • In 1857 the Missouri Compromise was signed by Monroe. It stated that Missouri could have slaves but no new ones and once thier kids were 25 they were to be set free. But, this was only a temperary fix. it postponed figthing but it also lead to more brutall fights alonf the way and it contributed dirasticslly to all slaves beign set free and the civil war.
  • The Compromise was a failure because the Civil War still occured, the compromise falls under Culture and Socitey because it delt with a new worry int socitey and how it would effect the government and everyday life. Propents were teh nothern states as they liked that hte states would eventully become free. The opponets were the south beacuse those states woudl eventully become free.
