  • No more Jews!

  • Riots were now spreading to other English towns. He longed or wanted to get back to York.
  • When he got there, things were no better. Some of the Yorkshire landowners owned the Jews money. They had been encouraging the ordinary people of York to hate the Jews.
  • Before Josce could rush to protect them, a mob killed Benedict's wife and all his children.
  • Josce thought quickly. He gathered together all the Jews and fled to York Castle for safety. The Jew's leader,Rabbi Yemtob, encouraged his people to commit suicide
  • Many did. But those who didn't kill themselves were promised that they would be freed, but on one condition. They would have to be baptized or turn as Christians. The terrified Jews agreed, in hope of saving their lives
  • But the mob broke their promise and killed them anyway.
