Storyboard Text

  • I wonder what makes a living thing living?
  • I know! there are 5 things that can help you distinguish between something that's living, and something that isn't. Let me show you
  • All living things need energy to live. there are many ways to get this energy. For example, lions eat other animals, while plants get energy from the sun.
  • Characteristic #1 All living things need energy
  • <-- Millions of cells Trillions of cells-->
  • Characteristic #2 All living things have cells
  • All living things have to have at least one cell. Cells are the basic building blocks of life, so every living thing needs them.
  • All living things react to changes in their environment. For example, a human reacts to being hot with sweating to cool themselves down.
  • Characteristic #3 All living things respond to their environment
  • All living things grow and reproduce. An example of this is when an animal has a baby. Then the baby grows up and has more babies. It is a cycle.
  • Characteristic #4 All living things grow and reproduce
  • This is the hardest one to understand. It means that whatever is happening in a living things environment, it can still function properly.
  • Characteristic #5 All living things can maintain a stable internal environment
