Charlemagne was a devout christian his goal was to rule in a christian manner. The Pope and Charlemagne worked together by Charlemagne supporting the pope when he went back to Rome. The pope rewarded Charlemagne by crowning him the emperor of Rome. The lasting effect was that Charlemagne became the emperor of Rome.
You are now the emperor of Rome
Charlemagne believed that god had made him emperor in order to do God’s work on earth. The pope believed that the Church had made Charlemagne emperor. 200 years after Charlemagne’s coronation, the different views led to a dramatic clash between emperor and pope.
Never come again
Pope Gregory issued a list of rules declaring his supreme authority over both Church and secular leaders. King Henry IV reacted They were a direct attack on his own power and rights. The stage was set for a clash of wills between king henry and pope gregory.
Those rules are a direct attack at me! That is so unfair!
The clash began when Henry ignored the pope’s rules and named his own bishop for the city of Milan, Italy. In response, Pope Gregory appointed a rival bishop. The people across Europe reacted by members of the clergy and secular rulers took sides.
Go my bishop, Milan
The conflict ended for Pope Gregory and King Henry many years later the Church and the holy Roman empire reached an agreement called the Concordat of Worms. The agreement gave the church the sole authority to appoint bishops. It was not a success because popes and rulers continued to have their conflicts after this agreement was reached.
This is a truce for now
Through the next generations there were still many conflicts between empires but at the end there was still a truce between the empire called the Concordat of Worms.
Good things there is the Concordat of Worms because now I have no conflicts.
