  • The year was 2081, Hazel and George Bergeron live in a word were everyone is equal. "Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else"(pg.4). The H-G men were so vigilance that once they noticed the Bergeron's sons abilities they took him away.

  • People that were born superior abilities than other people were put in handicaps to make them as capable as everyone else. Stronger people like George had "pounds of birdshot in a canvas bag" (pg.6) around their neck. More intelligent people had to wear mental handicap radio in their ear to make them not as smart. 
  • Resolution
  • While Hazel was watching a station on TV cries of consternation came from the television. "A police photograph of Harrison Bergeron was flashed on the screen"(pg.8). Harrison broke into the station took off all his handicap and told everyone he is the Emperor. He then selected an Empress who wanted to get rid of her handicap as well. Everyone cowered before him.

  • The Emperor and the Empress were synchronizing to the music when Diana Moon Glampers, the Handicapper General, bursts through with a shotgun to neutralize their resistance towards societies standards. "The Emperor and the Empress were dead before they hit the ground"(pg.11). The television tube burned out and Hazel was left in tears. 
  • George walked in the room and asked why she was crying. She says she saw something sad on tv but she cant really remember. "'Forget sad things,' said George", "'I always do' said Hazel"(pg.12). Hazel and George went back to their lives, not knowing that their son was killed because he didn't fit into society.  
  • The story is based on a dystopian world were "everybody was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way"(pg.4). Hazel and George Bergeron are an example of how this type of society effects them and most importantly there 14 year old boy, who got taken away because of his abilities that were more than average. He was a threat to society and it led to his and other people deaths.
