A drunk Ted Narracott is at a farm auction and needs to buy a plowing horse. He ends up buying the wrong horse and returns home to an angry wife.
Joey is taken by the German army
Ted is furious about his purchase and wants to return him, but his son Albert said that he'll train the horse. Albert named the horse Joey and trained him really well.
Emily finds the horses
War rages out in Britain and people are told that they have to give their horse to the army, but Albert doesn't want Joey to leave. He asked if he could join the army with Joey but is declined because he is too young.
Joey gets put back in war
After a battle between the British and the German where the British lost, Joey and Topthorn are taken by the German army. One of the German horse trainers, Private Hengleman, decides to free the two horses and takes his little brother with him. They hide in a windmill but they are found by the German soldiers and were killed, but they didn't find the horses.
After the horses were left in the windmill a little girl named Emily found them and started to train them. However, German soldiers were raiding houses for food and found the horses. They took the horses and Emily was heartbroken.
