Dred Scott was born as a slave as a slave in Virginia. He later got sold to Dr. John Emerson who was a military doctor. Because of this, Dred got to travel all over the world and got to do what most slaves would never get to do. John Emerson took Dred and his wife to the free territory of Wisconsin.
Were going to Wisconsin!
After many years, Scott, his wife, his kids, and Emerson all moved away to St. Louis. After Emerson passed away, John gave his slaves to his wife, Eliza Irene Sanford.
I own you guys now.
After John died, the Scott family tried to buy there freedom from Sanford but she turned there offer down. Scott was infuriated and sued the court claiming that since they were already living in a free state they should be free.
We should be free! We are offering you lots of money and you are turning it down!
The court appealed his claim and Dred made it all the way up to the Supreme Court. The court finally made a decision and declared that African Americans were not citizens.Justice Roger B. Taney claimed that Scott was not allowed to sue in court because he wasn't a citizen.
You can't sue, your not a citizen!
You should be sued!
Dred ended up losing his argument in court. This entire Dred Scott event cleary showed that slavery was far from over.
We won this round but they northerners will be mad now.
