Salva is at school everything about him is paying attention except for his eyes and his mind. Since he already knows the lesson for the day his eyes keep flickering toward the window. Through the window he sees the road that he will soon be walking on to go home.
The class suddenly hears an odd CRACK! The teacher did not know if it was a gunshot or just a car backfiring, so he continued on with his lesson. Until, CRACK! POP-POP-CRACK! The teacher yelled "Gunfire! Everyone run quickly, all of you! Into the bush!"
Before Salva was even awake he could feel that something was wrong. Then he sat up and opened his eyes. No one else in the barn. So he rushed to the door and looked out. Nobody. Nothing. They had left him. He was alone.
"A, B, C"
Salva suddenly hears someone yell his name. He found that a man was hurrying toward him. When the man was only a few steps away Salva suddenly realized that the man was his uncle. So he ran into the mans arms.
One man among the group stopped in front of Uncle. Salva could tell that the man was from the Nuer tribe. Then two other men took Uncle man yards away and tied him to a tree. Then Salva heard the two men laughing and then heard tree gunshots.
One day after the morning meal, MIchael spoke to Salva. "You seem interested in English. How would you like to learn to read." Michael wrote down three letters on a small piece of paper and said, " A, B, C."
