Mesopotamia is located in what today is known as the country of Iraq, in the continent of Asia. And the 2 main rivers are Tigris and Euphrates.
People moved to the Zagros foothills but after awhile, food shortages became a problem. The people then moved to the plains to have more room to grow food and live.
The rivers would flood the plains. The people developed early irrigation systems and built levees and dams to help control the flooding from the rivers.
The Sumerians had to clean the silt out of the canals to keep the irrigation system working. People in different villages had to work together to make this happen as it was a tough job. Sumer became a city-state.
The different villages would fight about many things, but mostly about water.
Sumerians overcame many difficult situations, food shortages, farming problems, learning how to control water, and even learning how to defend their own small towns were all issues they had to face. Over time, they found many solutions to these problems. Thanks to the Sumerians, we now have it pretty easy!
