One major theme of, "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street" is, "fear and suspicion are disruptive". The people on Maple Street thought they saw a meteor fall to earth and everyone was scared. Pete Van Horn appeared out of the darkness, after checking on the neighborhood. The people thought he was a monster. Charlie soon let his fear get the best of him, and shot Pete. If Charlie had not shot Pete, the people may have thought that Charlie was the reason for the power outage, as if Charlie was expecting him and knew who the figure was. As if Pete and Charlie were the aliens like Tommy suggested. However, the power at Charlie’s house still went off and on. So either way you slice it, the people of Maple Street were forming suspicions to figure things out. When the people came to Charlie as an angry mob, Charlie immediately found a scapegoat to get out of it; which was the little boy Tommy. The people of Maple Street then lost control and became disruptive and started fighting one another. This is why the aliens thought so little about the people on Maple Street. The only thing the aliens had to do was turn a few lights out and drive their ship over them. The aliens did not have to attack the people themselves. This is proof that people can quickly become corrupted and it only takes fear and suspicion to do a lot of damage.
