An unmotivated boy named Milo came home from school one day to find a tollbooth and a car waiting for him. He got in the car and went through the Phantom Tollbooth.
For Milo, who has lots of time
Milo stops thinking and he gets taken to the Doldrums. There he meets the lazy Lethargarians and the helpful watchdog Tock.
Welcome to the Doldrums, where nothing ever happens and nothing ever changes.
Tock and Milo go to Dictionopolis, where they get in trouble with the police.
Words for sale!
I am the Humbug, how nice it is to meet you.
Make your own words!
They found the Which, and she told them all about how the princesses got banishes to the Castle In The Air and how the only way to save them was to embark on a really hard journey.
Once upon a time, there were the princes of Words and Numbers, and they had two sisters, the princesses of Sweet Rhyme and Pure Reason...
We need to go!
Milo and Tock asked to go and save the princesses so Rhyme and Reason could come back. The King said yes as long as they got permission from his brother in Digitopolis and took the Humbug, because he knew much about where to go.
It is dangerous, but if you get permission, then you can go.
The journeyers found a floating kid named Alec that grew down instead of up, and went to Illusions and Reality. Reality was a town that was basically invisible.
I'm Alec! The one on your left is Illusions, and the one on your right is Reality.
