Frederick Douglass was born into slavery. His old slave owner Mr. Thomas gave him away to Mr. Covey to be broken. For six months Douglass was whipped each week. After that the whippings stopped. However, that would soon change.
Mr. Covey would not leave him alone. Douglas worked in the field like he was supposed to like other slaves. Mr. Covey worked along side them and would rest in the afternoons. He was a cunning man who would surprise the slaves to keep them in line.
With Douglass's awkwardness was basically Mr. Covey's excuse to whip Frederick Douglass. Douglass and the other slaves would work on the fields from day till night. However, when they approach in the morning they would be worked to death. Mr. Covey is making them work harder than I thought.
