George and Lennie are running away from Weed because Lennie tried to touch this girls red dress. They are hiding in the river from the men that are chasing them. (Exposition)
Candy's dog serves no purpose to him anymore and the guys are urging him to shoot the dog to put it out of its misery. Carlson shoots Candy's dog right in the back of his head. Candy says he wishes he shot his dog instead of Carlson. (Foreshadowing)
Since Lennie likes to pet and play with soft things, he gets one of the mutts and starts petting it. The puppy bites at Lennie and he grabs it, breaking the puppies neck. (Rising Action)
Lennie and Curley's wife are talking in the barn after Lennie accidentally kills the puppy. Curley's wife lets Lennie touch her hair because he likes soft things. She jerks away as he holds onto her hair. He covers her mouth from screaming and shakes her which ends up breaking her neck. (Climax)
George takes Carlson's gun from his bed then runs down to meet them. Carlson thinks Lennie took his gun. (Falling Action)
George finds Lennie in a clearing in the woods. George calms Lennie down by talking about their future with the rabbits. George steadies his gun on Lennie's head and shoots him. (Resolution)
