In the 5th century, the Anglo-Saxons migrated from Northern Germany to the island of Germany.
The island of Britain was divided into many little pieces soon to be invaded and taken over by the Anglo-Saxons.
They first to be dominated in the early 600s was Northumbria. Then the kingdom of Mercia can into power in 700s, and finally the kingdom of Wessex in the 800s (King of Wessex, king of all England).
In the mid-800s the Danes began to invade Europe, and quickly started turned to invade the kingdom of Wessex. But, the young prince Alfred led the Saxons against the Danes and won.
Prince Alfred, after his great battle became king in 871. As he continued to battle the Danes they can to a peace treaty in 886. Alfred was known as, Alfred the Great, and he also created education, laws, a navy, and reformed also the English economy
With the Norman Conquest of 1066, their Anglo-Saxon rule came to an end. But, even after they were defeated, they left their great legacies of politics, language, and culture.
