A year ago, Jonas felt frightened when he saw an aircraft. Planes were not allowed to fly over the community, as it is against the rules.
During dinner time, it is a rule that the family units talk about their feelings. Jonas explains that he is apprehensive about the upcoming Ceremony of Twelve.
Can't I learn yet??
It is too early for you to learn how to ride a bike. That is against the rules...
December is coming up, and Father, a Nurturer, brings up talk about Gabe. Gabe is the name of the One that the family unit will soon receive.
You are The new Receiver of Memory.
Every morning, each family unit talks about their dreams from the night before. Usually, Jonas does not have dreams. This time, Jonas did have a dream, which actually turned out to be stirrings. As a cause of this, he is put on medication.
On the morning of the Ceremony, the family unit goes over each of their milestones. For example: the Sevens get a jacket that they can button themselves, Eights begin to volunteer, Nines get bikes and girls no longer need to wear hair ribbons.
At the Ceremony of Twelve, Jonas's name was skipped, or so he thought. After everyone else's name was called, Jonas became apprehensive. The announcer had then stated that she knew it seemed like a mistake, but that basically she was saving the best for last. Jonas's assignment was a rare one. He was given the responsibility of being The Receiver of Memory.
