Mama and Papa discuss the war and what's happening outside. Papa says, "The streets are filled with people, Aana. Homeless, hungry, desperate . . ."
It becomes morning. The day is busy and festive for the coming New Year. Om Bao and Milk Mother try to get Raami to listen and get ready. "Hurry, Hurry. Hurry!"
Mama walks into the garden to spectate the new blooming flowers that are tended by Old Boy. To Raami, she looks like a "rainbow gliding through a field of flowers."
The family (Raami, Papa, Mama, Tata, and Grandmother Queen) begin to arrive for the New Year's breakfast. "At last Grandmother Queen appeared on the balcony, leaning heavily on Papa's arm. She slowly descended the stairs, and we all rushed to greet her."
Everyone sits down at the table to finally eat breakfast--"lotus seed porridge sweetened with palm sugar, sticky rice with roasted sesame and shredded coconut, beef noodle soup topped with coriander leaves and anise stars, mushroom omelets, and slices of baguette."
Milk Mother, Radana, Grandmother Queen, Raami fall asleep outdoors. Meanwhile, Papa talks to Mama once again about the war. "Les Khmer Rouges, Communists, Marxists . . ."
