  • To get the mummy to the final mummy stage, they would have to take the following steps.
  • They would soak the corpse in a baking soda and salt mix called Natron for 35 -40 days. While the body was soaking they would remove the brain and organs.
  • They would then put the organs in special containers. They would replace the missing body parts with either mud or sawdust. After that they would put the oil and/or resin covered linens tightly around the body. Finally they would put items in the coffin that would be needed in the afterlife.
  • On the 70th day, whoever prepared the body will pray and give good wishes to the pharaoh's dead body which will get the spirit through to the afterlife. After the 70 days they will close the tomb.
  • Mummification was done to preserve the body so that it can successfully go on to the afterlife. The god Osiris was believed to only successfully judge your soul if the body was intact. Now, for the body, more so soul, to survive, it would need to have items that would help it survive packed within the tomb.
  • Lastly I will tell you about some of the prayers and spells that were cast among the body. The most important prayer would be: Opening of the mouth. This was when the priest would touch parts of the body with a special tool/instrument. Each part that was touched was released into the afterlife which would give them real life attributes in the afterlife
  • You are probably wondering what items I was talking about in the last slide.  They would put things such as food, their mask, ad other meaningful things, including mummified pets. This would help the body and soul be more comfortable in the afterlife
