- For the first time in his life Douglass was a field hand. He worked beyond his personal abilities 6 days a week almost all day long. While working in the fields, being beaten was a routine for Douglass. It was impossible to escape Covey “the snake”. Douglass was somewhat unmanageable in the beginning but Covey broke him.
- Douglass escaped the torture and ran into the cold, dark, and lonely woods. He decided to stay with Sandy Jenkins another slave. Sandy told him to go back to Covey but he also gave him magic root that protects the slaves from being beaten. He took the root. When he returned back to the plantation he did not get violently beaten.
- Covey had a plan up his sleeve to trick Douglass in well thought situation. While Douglass was working, Covey snuck up behind him and tried to tie his feet together with a rope but failed. Douglass immediately fought back. They were kicking, punching, and rolling all over the ground. Finally Covey stopped fighting and gave up, Douglass won
