Harold Amos was born September 7, 1918 in Pennsauken, New Jersey.
He studied biology and chemistry at Springfield College in Springfield Massachusetts. He graduated with honors in 1941.
After college, Harold joined the US army in 1942 and he arrived in France six days after the Normandy invasion. He was discharged from the army in 1946.

After the army he studied at Harvard Medical School and earned his PhD in 1952. He was the first African American to receive that honor. He later became a Professor there.
Over his lifetime Harold Amos made many important discoveries in microbiology. He inspired thousands of minorities to become medical doctors.
