  • Prior to 28 June, 1914 Serbians angry at amount of power from Austria-Hungary
  • 28 June 1914 The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip 
  • 7 July, 1914 Austro-Hungarian Ministerial Council decides on ultimatum to Serbia (delayed delivery   to 23 July) .
  • 28 July, 1914 Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia. Wilhelm II proposes ‘Halt in Belgrade’.
  • 1 August, 1914 Germany declares war on Russia (already mobilised). France and Germany begin general mobilisation.
  • 3 August German troops invade Belgium; Germany’s declaration of war on France. Italy decision to stay neutral announced.
  • 4 August, 1914 Britain declares war on Germany.
  • 6 August, 1914 Austria-Hungary declares war on Russia.
