In the beginning we meet the White family, consisting of Mr. White , Mrs. White, and Herbert White. Herbert and Mr. White are playing chess while Mrs. White is knitting calmly by the fire. The family is being visited by a solder named Sargent- Major Morris. Sargent is telling the White's about his travels in India.
The Sargent show's the family a monkey's paw the Sargent tells the White's tat the paw had a spell put on it by an old fakir. He said that the paw can grant 3 wishes to 3 different men. The Sergeant tells the family that the fakir didn't want people to interfere with fate so every wish has consequences.
The whites wish for 200 pounds to see if the paw works. The next day after Herbert goes off to work, Mr. and Mrs. White are visited by someone who works for Maw & Megans, the same place Herbert works. They come bearing the news that Herbert had died after falling in the machinery and they offer 200 pounds to compensate. 3 months after the funeral, Mrs. White forced Mr. White to wish Herbert back to life.
Mr. White finds the paw and wishes for Hebert to live again. After a while and nothing happens Mr. White makes Mrs. White come to bed. Later in the night the Whites hear a knocking at the door. Mrs. White swears it is Herbert.
Mrs. White tries unlocking and opening the door, but Mr. White doesn't want Herbert, or whatever is outside to come in so he tries to find the paw. Mrs. White pulls up a chair to unlock the door as Mr. White finds the paw.
Mrs. White gets the door open ad a cold wind flows up the stairs from the outside. Mrs. White runs outside, sad that her son isn't there. Mr. White builds up the courage to go out and comfort Mrs. White. Mrs. White collapses to the ground as the street lamp flickers.
