  • Longhorns improved texans lives by providing beef and more. During the civil war, confederate army needed to feed the troops. Longhorn beef fed thousands of texans.
  • Oil
  • Back in the 1800’s texans used cattle drives to move cattle. Cattle drives in texas were made to ship groups of cattle south of the rio grande to supply beef for spanish military outpost. During the revolutionary war, texas cattle supported spanish and american armies.
  • Railroads and farming
  • The discovery of oil in spindletop occured on January 10, 1901. Located near Beaumont in jefferson county.  It was incredible, people could even see the oil shooting from the ground over 10 miles away!

  • Most towns were unbelievably crowded and dirty. Some workers lived in tents or wooden shacks. Due to the population at boomtowns it caused more violence, which soon made it dangerous to live in some towns.
  • Farmers life started to become more easier in the 1840’s. They begun using horse drawn plows and two row planters. Their farming life began to become less complicated which allowed them to do less work.
  • Railroads were cheap, fast, and people could rely on them for safe transportation. While traveling about 40 miles took about two days, traveling on railroads took less than two hours. Shortly, everyone rode railroads because other transportation were expensive and were time consuming.
