The story takes place in northern Texas in the harvest time. We meet a Hispanic brothers, Tobie and Joey. These hispanics named the chicanos work the cotton fields and return home when their job is done.

The conflict is Joey feels like he doesn't belong with anyone. He feels like he doesn't belong with the chicanos. He also feels like he doesn't belong with the gringos.
Joey needs to get a haircut. He couldn't go to Mr. Lopez's barbershop because there is too many people there. Tobie tells him to go to Mr. Brewers.
Do you need a haircut?
Joey goes to Mr. Brewers. He is too nervous to say anything. Everyone leaves the barbershop. Then Mr. Brewer tells him to leave and go to Mr. Lopez's.
Joey goes to Mr. Lopez's and it is too full. He leaves and goes home. Later he talks to his dad and brother.
His dad says he can have the route. He gets to know everyone. Then he gets a haircut at Mr. Brewers.
