Hi! My name is Mary Clarke. I am a 16 year old living in Dublin, Ireland during the 1800s. I live with my parents and my older and younger brother here as tenants on a farm.
My family is Catholic and we go to church near the farm.
It isn't an easy life as a poor tenant farmer. Many Catholic farmers, like my family, are considered tenants-at-will and can be evicted from our home with little notice from the landlord.
I spend most of my time out in the fields with my father and older brother growing potatoes and cash crops, such as oats and barely.
In 1845, a lack of food hit Ireland due to an airborne fungus that spread across the countryside killing people's main source of food here, potatoes.
Sadly, my mother and younger brother passed away during the Potato Famine, along with almost 1.5 million other Irish men and women who died of starvation or disease.
