In 1965 Nicolae Ceausescu, and his wife set up a rigid and dictatorial regime in Romania. Ceausescu ruled Romania with an iron grip, using secret police to crush all dissent.
Ceausescu's economic polices led to a drop in living standards, including food shortages and rationing food. His plan for urbanization, was to bulldoze entire villages, which further angered the people.
In December 1989, the secret police killed thousands of man, women, and children who were peacefully demonstrating. The army refused to support any more repression. Ceausescu and his wife were captured on December 22 and executed on Christmas Day, and a new government formed quickly.
