  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act was an act that repealed the Missouri Compromise and created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska. Many people were opposed to this act.
  • Anti-Slavery
  • Settlers begin to move into the newly established Kansas. Most supported slavery.
  • Pro-Slavery
  • Slavery is allowed in Kansas, largely due Missouri voters overwhelming those from Kansas.
  • We petition for statehood and propose a constitution that bans slavery.
  • Traitors!
  • John Brown, an abolitionist, reacted by murdering pro-slavery supporters in what became known as the Pottawatomie Massacre.
  • Violence between both sides continued throughout the state and even spread to the capital. Preston Brooks caned the antislavery leader Charles Sumner.
