At the beginning of the story, Montresor is a bitter man who wants revenge against an associate of his named Fortunato. Montresor crosses paths with Fortunato and the opportunity arises to spring his trap. Montresor shakes hands with Fortunato and tells about the rare Amontillado he has purchased. Montresor pretends to be concerned for Fortunato’s health and feigns that they should turn back and leave the catacombs, knowing Fortunato will insist they move forward. Montresor offers Fortunato another drink because he secretly wants to keep his victim intoxicated.
Montresorstabs Fortunato with hissword and drops a flamein the space, just to makesure that Fortunato will diethere. Montresor attacks, locksFortunato in chains, and seals him up insidea wall.
