  • Odessa Lyon One
  • by Sarah Crossan
  • "You see, Tippi and I are not what you'd call normal... Anyone with a jot of good manners calls us 'conjoined'... We are literally joined at the hip — united in blood and bone... the city won't fund our homeschooling but they'll pay for a place at a private school — Hornbeacon High."
  • Exposition: Grace and Tippi are conjoined identical twins in Hoboken, New Jersey with their younger sister — Dragon — parents, and grandma.
  • Mom           Dragon
  • Grace    Tippi
  • Grammie            Dad
  • Rising Action: Grace and Tippi both start experiencing problems, fainting and collapsing in several instances
  • "Lumbering across the quadrangle on our way to French it is Tippi who collapses, hitting the gravel hard and I spill right on top of her... I wait for Tippi's eyes to open — for her to shoo Caroline away with a casual 'I'm okay, I'm okay.'  But those words do not come."
  • Climax: Grace's heart is diseased and Tippi's heart has been working extra to support it, and their doctor advises an operation to separate them.
  • Falling Action: After the operation, Grace wakes up to the fact that Tippi has an infection, and later dies
  • Resolution: With her grief of Tippi's death, Grace tells their story to Caroline and her camera.
  • "Dr. Derreck taps his forefingers together... 'Grace has developed cardiomyopathy and Tippi is supporting her, supporting her and a very dilated heart. We can't repair the damage... I have to recommend a separation...'  'We should give it a go,' I say.
  • "In the morning Tippi's eyes are narrow slits... 'I'm sinking.' she says. 'You're not.' I lie... What am I supposed to do? I don't  know so I say the words I would want to hear, "Go, if you have to...' 'Tippi's gone.' he says.
  • "Caroline comes alone... she sets up at the end of my bed and starts rolling anyway. 'I want to talk,' I say... 'Go on,' Caroline says. And I do. I go on... here is my story. The story of how it is to be Two. The story of how it is to be One. The Story of Us. And it is an epitaph... to love.
