Storyboard Text

  • When your eyes see food, like me, your salivary glands produce saliva. Saliva is mostly made of salivary amylase, an enzyme which breaks down carbohydrates.
  • Next I go through the esophagus, a tube that takes me to your stomach. I am pushed through the esophagus by smooth muscle contractions, called peristalsis.
  • When I am in your mouth, I get chewed up by your tongue and teeth. This is called mechanical digestion. Once I am chewed, I am called a bolus.
  • Next I pass through the epiglottis, a small flap of tissue, to the pharynx, which take me from the mouth to the esophagus
  • Next I go to the stomach, where I am chemically and mechanically digested. I am mechanically digested by muscle contractions. Chemical digestion happens mix with stomach acids and liquifies me. For example, pepsin is an enzyme that breaks down proteins in the stomach. I am now called chyme.
  • Next I go through the small intestine, a long, muscular tube where chemical digestion is completed. This means that the small intestine uses bile and enzymes to break down carbs, proteins, and lipids. It also absorbs nutrients into the bloodstream. The walls of the small intestine contains villi, small fingerlike projections, that increase the surface area for food absorption.
  • I never go here but the liver produces bile and releases it to the gallbladder. Bile helps break down lipids.
  • I don't go the the gallbladder either, but it strengthens the bile and send it into the small intestine.
  • After completing digestion in the small intestine, I go the the large intestine. It stores me as waste, since all the nutrients have been adsorbed. it also removes water and puts in into the bloodstream.
  • The pancreas produces and release enzymes that mix with me in the small intestine.
  • Finally, I am pushed through the rectum and anus, removing me from your body. this is called elimination.
