Stella Grant has been in and out of hospitals throughout her life getting treated for Cystic Fibrosis. She is very careful not to get within 6 feet of other patients with Cystic Fibrosis in order to qualify for a lung transplant.
Human Touch. We need that touch from the one's we love, almost as much as we need air to breathe. I never understood that, until I couldn't have it
Five Feet Apart By: Rachael Lippincott
Will Newman is a new patient at the hospital. He also suffers from CF. His wealthy mother has arranged for him to participate in new treatments and trials. However, Will has given up on getting better.
Soon after they meet, the two develop interests in one another. They roam the hospital whenever they get past Nurse Barb, but are very cautious to stay 6 feet away from each other at all times.
After spending time together and reflecting on life and what it means to be alive, they attempt to "date" at 6 feet apart.
If this is all we get, then let's take it. I want to be fearless and free. It's just life, Will. It'll be over before we know it.”
Wanting their life to be more than hospitals, treatments, and death, they go out on a date. Although, they keep at a distance of 6 feet, Will keeps thinking that he'll somehow infect Stella and she won't be able to live a healthy life.
Don’t think about what you’ve lost. Think of how much you have to gain. Live, Stella.
In an uncharacteristic act of rebellion, Stella decides to "take back" a foot of what CF has stolen from her and Will. She decides that if both are careful to be disinfected and sterile around each other, they can maintain a distance of 5 feet instead of 6. But what if 5 feet is still not enough?
I smile at him, and take just one more stolen step, until we're five feet apart.
