The Great Compromise

The Great Compromise

Storyboard Text

  • How many votes does each state get in the new government?
  • I am James Madison and I believe the amount of votes each state gets should be based on their population, so states with larger populations have more votes. This is just the fair way of doing things. More population means you should have more say.
  • Virginia's plan
  • I am William Patterson and I believe every state should have the same amount of votes, no matter how big or small their population is. This is the smart way of doing things every state should be equal, and the same amount of votes means it's fair for big and small states.
  • New Jersey's plan
  • So what is the Great Compromise?
  • I am Rodger Sherman and the Great Compromise is a agreement met by both sides in the Constitutional Convention of 1787. This Compromise developed the idea of a bicameral legislative, which means two separate assemblies. One assemble was the House of Representatives which sided with the Virginian plan because it was based on state population. The other assemble was the Senate which sided with the New Jersey plan because every state has the same amount of senators.
  • I'm from the North and I believe slavery is nefarious and that slaves are property that should be taxed and not counted for representation.
  • Key issue: how to deal with slavery.
  • I'm from the South and I believe slaves are numbers and they should be counted for representation not taxation.
  • I have a solution it's called the 3/5 compromise, this compromise allows for 60% of slaves to be counted for representation. But those 60% of slaves also have to be taxed as property. Okay now that we all have a solution lets not talk about this for another 20 years.
