The Green Knight comes to King Arthur and his men, speaking of peace but inferring violence. He says that non of Arthur's men could defeat him in the challenge he offers.
"If its a dual your after, We'll furnish you your fight"(Line59-60).
" Good heavens, I want no such thing! " (Line 61).
"I come to you in peace, not spoiling for battle"(Line 48).
The Green Knight proposes a challenge where if someone is brave enough to chop off his head then they may keep his axe but he must chop theirs off in return.
"What has become of your chivalry and your conquest?"(Line 93).
"And so all I ask of this court is a Christmas game"(line 65).
"Give me your gisarme, then, for the love of God." (line108)
Arthur offers to take the Knight challenge but Gawain interjects to protect his king . After the Knights head is chopped off he rises and picks it up to tell Gawain that he must come to his castle to finish the game on New Years.
"Let this game be mine." (line 124).
"And then quickly he slashed at that naked neck" (line 154).
"At the end of the day, they will exchange what they have won" (pg 216)
On his search for the Green Knight, Gawain stays with a lord and his lady. The lord and Gawain exchange whatever they have gained that day. On his third day with them the lady gives him a scarf that will protect him which he keeps.
"...and on the first two days, accepts only kisses which he gives to the lord at the end of each day..." (pg 216)
