  • The Persians took over Ionia, which was a Greek settlement in Asia Minor (Turkey today) The Greeks sent an army to fight the Persians. They won the first few battles and then left.  However, the Persians continued to fight and won the war. This revolt was the beginning of the Greek-Persian wars.

  • King Darius was still angry that the Greeks fought them in Ionia. He wanted to take over Greece but the Greeks refused.They went into battle against the city-state of Marathon.Miltiades organized his soldiers and he eventually won the battle against the powerful Persian army by using clever military strategies.

  • In 480 BCE, King Xerxes from Persia sent an army 180,000 soldiers to Greece to conquer the city-states. The Spartan King, Leonidas, tried to stop them at Thermopylae. They only had 6,000-7,000 soldiers in their army. They could only hold back the Persians. Leonidas sent all but 300 soldiers home. The 300 fought bravely, but the Greeks lost The Battle of Thermopylae.
