Father Cochrane wanted to start a Catholic school. Bishop Stewart agreed and invited the FMDM Sisters to start the school. The Sisters arrived in 1961. They lived in the Nathalia Convent.
Most of the materials was donated by Roger Young, and all the school's finance was donated. Many people - like the Father's Group, Working Bees, and the community - helped build the school alongside the FMDM Sisters.
In 1961, there was the official opening and blessing of St Mary of the Angels. There were 120 primary students and 5 secondary students. The first principal was Mary Mother of the Cross, and the first teachers were the FMDM Sisters.
Over time, the school has changed immensely! It was split into a secondary and primary school. They named the primary school St Francis. There is now buses that go far, more staff, students, buildings and portables, there are now lay principals, the uniform and logo.
At St Marys, there are three saints - St Francis, St Clare and St Elizabeth. Francis is yellow, Clare is blue and Elizabeth is red. St Marys use these saints for sports days, swimming sports days, community times and group activities.
St Marys logo is currently a dove, with the words below it: Thy Will Be Done
