Instead of Florida, the group landed in the Bahamas. In spite of the discrepancy, they are told to not set foot in the Bahamas, or they will be sent back to Cuba, for it is a transgression. People at the dock give them food, water, and medicine for Isabel's sick mother when they said they would continue on to Florida.
Isabel and Ivan are submerged in the water to escape the heat. Everyone is trying to come up with a name for the "boat", and barely audible, almost incoherently Lito suggests the St. Louis, the name of Josef's ship. Soon after in a haphazard shark attack, Ivan is fatally injured.
The group on the boat was listless and mournful after Ivan passed away due to the shark bite. They buried Ivan in the ocean reverently, and said a small prayer. Their Odyessy had brought them so far, and Isabel noticed a light on the horizon; Miami. Ivan had died just before they reached Miami.

Lito says that they can row to shore, but they soon hear sirens, and sees the US Coast Guard trying to stop them from committing an insensible violation of the United States law.
This is the US Coast Guard, please remain where you are and prepare to be boarded.
Lito jumped into the water to distract the Coast Guard, and the group finally made it to shore! Isabel walked with her baby brother, Mariano, named after Lito, and Isabel's mother was carried to shore. Everyone was full of elation to see America, and embrace their futures in el norte.
Isabel discovered the coda, the end of the song of her life. It ended in Miami with new friends, and a great life in America where they immigrated. Isabel played a pantomimed version of the Star Spangled Banner in band class, and found her clave, the rhythm she could never hear in Cuba ,but discovered in America
