  • Action: Narrator
  • "When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn't walk, so I set out to teach him." (Hurst 318) This reveals that our narrator is self-centered but also determined when it comes to his brother. He knows his brother has medical issues but he still refuses to have an abnormal brother and he sets out to change him.
  • Looks: William (Doodle)
  • ""Then I'll leave you here by yourself," I threatened, and made as if I were going down. Doodle was frightened of being left. "Don't go leave me, Brother," he cried. (Hurst 318) This reveals that our narrator has a threatening cruelty towards Doodle sometimes. He knows that it would frighten Doodle, but he threatens to leave him anyways.
  • "I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of rain." (Hurst 323) This reveals that our narrator is mournful and possibly feeling guilty and full of disbelief from the death of his little brother, Doodle. He knew it was too hard for Doodle to run with him but he leaves and then comes back to find him dead. He mourns over the body of his little brother.
  • "He seemed all head, with a tiny body which was red and shriveled like an old man's" (Hurst 316) This reveals that William is dependent on everyone around him. He was born with a lot of medical problems, so his family will need to take care of him.
