  • Langston Hughes was born on February 1, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. His parents, James Hughes and Carrie Langston separated soon after his birth.  He was raised by his grandmother and she died when he was a teenager.
  • Traveling
  • After his grandma died, he went live with his mother. They settled in Cleveland , Ohio. And went to school. His teachers introduced poetry  to Langston. He started writing poetry
  • Later Life
  • Langston graduated , then he spent the following year in mexico with his father. His poem  " The Negro Speaks of Rivers" was published.
  • Death
  • Then, he  went to Columbia University but he was lonely and unhappy so he dropped out of school. He worked in various of jobs before signing up as a steward on a freighter that took him to Africa and Spain. He left the ship and lived for a brief time in Paris, where he developed and published his poetry
  • Columbia University
  • When Langston worked as a a busboy he met an American poet who was very impressed by his poems at s restaurant. His name was Vachel Lindsay. He was so impressed that he promoted Langston's poetry which brought a wider audience.
  • On May 22, 1967, Langston Hughes died pf a prostate cancer. To his poetry, his funeral was filled with jazz and blues music . His ashes  were put beneath entrance of the Arthur Schumburg center for research in Black culture interlard.
