Hey did you hear about Mrs. Jones pregnancy test results and the drama down in room 480?
Nooo, I didn't. Tell me everything that happened I HAVE to know!!
Can you spot any HIPAA violations in this scenario?
The 2 RN's are gossiping about another patient's pregnancy test results, along with other private information. None of the information being spread is needed for the RN's to effectively do their job.
There is a HIPAA violation in this scenario!
Patient's private health information is meant to be super confidential. The only reason information like this should be shared is if it's absolutely NEEDED in order for the workers to perform their jobs. Other than that information like this should never be shared around the workplace. And for the RN's to go around gossiping about someone else's information like that is a major HIPPA violation.
So with that being said, using you prior knowledge along with what you have just learned, what do you think couldn't been done differently for this bad scenario to never have happened?
The Correct Answer: The best thing that should've been done differently in this scenario was for the RN's to avoid discussion about other patient's private information. And in RN 2's case, when a coworker brings up a patient's private info, just ignore it and express to the coworker that you're not allowed to talk about this stuff unless absolutely necessary.
