“Our land is alive… this whole valley breathes and lives.” pg. 1 The characters are emotionally connected to the land. The land brings food and money to the valley. It also gives jobs to the servants and lots of money to Esperanza's family.
“No hay rosa sin espinas. There is no rose without thorns.” pg. 14 There is no life without difficulties and nothing is perfect. Esperanza experiences a lot of difficulties when she turns thirteen.
“The flames ran along the deliberate rows of the vines, like long curved fingers reaching for the horizon, lighting the night sky.” pg. 42 The flames were spreading along the vines toward the horizon. The flames are long and curved, so the author described them as looking like long curved fingers.
