WE WANT JUSTICE FOR THE SUGAR PLANTERS!!!
Keeping Europeans out of Hawaii was a large goal of the Americans. Upon gaining the Hawaiian islands, the U.S. also became a large part of the sugar trade.
In 1890, the relationship between the U.S. and Hawaii changed. This is when the United States implemented the McKinley Tariff. This was a tax on the import of sugar to the U.S. This caused a depression all across the Hawaiian islands.
In January of 1893, the planters revolted against the Hawaiian queen, who had agreed to the tariff. and with the help of the U.S. military conquered the islands.
The United States went to war with Spain in 1898. And the new Hawaiian naval base was a great factor in winning the war.
This naval base is going to win the war for us.
Finally, after many hard years of waiting, Hawaii is granted statehood as the fiftieth state in 1959.
