  • Why don't we purchase Hawaii!
  • 1840
  • We shall not let the Europeans have this land!
  • 1890
  • The Americans think the Hawaiians are stupid!
  • The U.S. started showing interest in Hawaii in the early 1820's. This is when New England missionaries started trying to spread their faith to other lands.
  • 1893
  • WE WANT JUSTICE FOR THE SUGAR PLANTERS!!!
  • Keeping Europeans out of Hawaii was a large goal of the Americans. Upon gaining the Hawaiian islands, the U.S. also became a large part of the sugar trade. 
  • 1898
  • In 1890, the relationship between the U.S. and Hawaii changed. This is when the United States implemented the McKinley Tariff. This was a tax on the import of sugar to the U.S. This caused a depression all across the Hawaiian islands.
  • 1959
  • In January of 1893, the planters revolted against the Hawaiian queen, who had agreed to the tariff. and with the help of the U.S. military conquered the islands.
  • The United States went to war with Spain in 1898. And the new Hawaiian naval base was a great factor in winning the war.
  • This naval base is going to win the war for us.
  • Finally, after many hard years of waiting, Hawaii is granted statehood as the fiftieth state in 1959.
