Rainsford outsmarted the general and beat Zaroff at his own game. "One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard, Rainsford . . .He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided."
Man vs Man
During the entire time Rainsford is playing the game he continues to tell himself to keep his nerve. He is in conflict with himself because he is nervous and not being confident in his abilities. He eventually overcomes this to win the game.
One time there is man vs nature is when Rainsford encounters Death Swamp where there is deadly quicksand.
The main man to man conflict throughout the story is between Zaroff and Rainsford. They are constantly going against each other with not only their beliefs but during the game too.
