Frederick Douglass is a 17 year old slave who all his life has been mistreated and worked to his limit. The days were hot as if Frederick had angered the forces of nature. Frederick was a different kind of slave, a curious slave. Although he did his work so his masters would not have an excuse to whip him, he had always wondered why he was put in this position. As a slave he spent everyday working in the dusty fields, having to wake up at the crack of dawn to start a days work. Since Frederick knew how to read he tried to teach his fellow slaves to read also but that got shut down. In the year 1835 Frederick, with the help of his fellow slaves, planned an escape from the clutches of slavery.
Frederick and the other slaves spent many days and nights working on this plan. Even though Frederick knew how to read he did not know much about the outside world because he was stuck on a wretched plantation his whole life. “What if this plan doesn’t work?”, asked John. Frederick replied with, “If the plan does not work we will return to a cursed life being a slave. But it would be worse knowing that we had the chance to escape and didn’t take it which is why we must go through with this,”. The other slaves were still anxious but having heard what Frederick said they were feeling more confident about the plan. Although Frederick had inspired the other slaves to go through with this, he was the most worried out of all of them; as the leader of the operation if this failed the master would go hardest on him. They spent days on this plan but there were still many flaws like guards watching them with a steel eye at every turn. But even before the guards, they had to make it off the plantation first and they couldn’t just walk off the property as they please, they had to get permission from the master. It was highly likely that the master wasn’t going to let them leave so they made fake permissions protecting them from question when the white folk were undoubtedly going to ask them why they were out by themselves. The night of their escape came. Frederick couldn’t sleep. He pondered the consequences if they should fail.
It was early morning, the dew drops scattered all over the plants were clearer than a sunny day. Frederick told Sandy, a friend of his, that the master had been alerted about their attempt to escape. After working of the field for a little bit it was time to eat breakfast. Once Frederick and the other slaves got to the house to eat the same oatmeal and biscuit they had everyday Frederick noticed four white men and two colored men. The master poked his head out the doorway and said, “Hey you!”. Frederick peered over at where the noise was coming from and saw the master pointing at him. He walked over to him. “There are some kind gentleman who would like to see you,” the master said. Frederick nodded and started making his way over to the white men.
