Economy - Sharecropping

Storyboard Text

  • Are you not tired of working in this farm allday for the owner and giving them pretty much all our earnings?
  • Yes, The longer we stay the more debt we are going to fall into.
  • I agree, we are not getting any profit for all the hard work. We´ll soon get in poverty
  • They are basically treating as slaves!
  • The debt we are falling into will go over and over like a cycle.
  • We are never going to get out the cycle because we never sell enough crops to receive the profit we want.
  • What they are talking about is SHARECROPPING. Sharecropping is a legal arrangement with regard to agricultural land in which a landowner allows a tenant to use the land in return for a share of the crops produced on that land. Sharecropping falls under economic.
  • The farmers were basically treated as slaves. The difference between the two is freedom, sharecroppers were free people, slaves were not. But the sharecroppers can not back up now because they have money that is due to the owner.
  • Sharecropping became a cycle of debt for many people who were part of this system. Many sharecroppers were former slaves. When they became free, they didn't have the resources to buy all the things they needed in order to farm the land. As a result, they rented land from the landowners. But they were never able to pay them the right amount.
