This is November 8, 1919 in Toronto when Herb Carnegie was born! His parents names are, Adina James Mitchell and George Nathaniel. He had black hair and brown eyes. Herb Carnegie was the 5th of 7 kids in his family. Since he was born he dreamed of playing in the NHL.
Growing up, he excelled in many sports. For example, football, lacrosse, baseball, boxing, wrestling, track and field and more. His absolute favourite sport was playing hockey!! He spent many hours of his day practising and hoping that one day he would achieve his dreams.
Herb Carnegie had many barriers but also some triumphs. He was very successful at school which led him to win an award from York University. Along with that, he got recognised for participating in community service. He liked to dedicate some of his time for other who needed it more then himself. Carnegie was the first black Canadian to join his hockey team!
It is now the year of 1940! Today was one of the happiest days of Herbs life. He married Audrey Redman. They were together for 60 years. Unfortunately in 2003 at age 63, Audrey passed away which was hard for him to deal with.
Herb Carnegie once tried out for the Toronto Maple Leafs NHL hockey team. He was later told by their head coach that he did not make it. The coach said that he could only make the team if he turned white. This was a brick wall for Herb as he could not join the team but that didn't stop him from trying.
When he got older he started to play senior golf. He stopped playing hockey and moved on with his life. Sometimes he played by him self. Other times in the week he got together with other friends who played golf too! On March 9th 2012 Carnegie died.
