  • Peninsulares - Born in Spain and then moved to the Spanish colonies in Latin America. They are the smallest percentage of the population and  have the highest political positions in colonial Latin America
  • Creoles -Spaniards who were born in colonial Latin America, and could no hold political office, but  could be army officers. Also Led the majority of independence movements in Latin America,
  • Took the leading role in the fight for freedom. Simon Bolivar was a Creole and a general and led the movements in Southern America
  •  Mestizos - One spanish parent and one native parent.  Mexico's independence movement was led by Father Miguel Hidalgo. They were defeated in 1811, four years later tried again, but failed
  • Slaves/Natives - Majority of slaves were Haitians. In 1971 10,000 slaves revolted, Toussaint L'Ouverture was the leader of the Haitian Revolution. 1801 L'Ouverture freed all of the slaves and inspired other Latin American colonies to revolt and declare independence.
  • Mulattos - One spanish parents and one African/slave parent
