Billie Jo's mother goes outside for her father before Billie Jo accidentally throws a pail of kerosene at her. The pail was left on the stove by her father.
Billie Jo used her hands to beat the flames as she thought of her mother and the baby on the way. This caused several burns to her hands.
Billie Jo's nightmare began with her playing her dusty piano that sounded horrible, as if someone was shrieking. Eventually, she pounded the piano keys with her fists and the piano shattered. It is also very dusty in the scene, even more than usual.
In the middle of her nightmare, Billie Jo ran away to to the Eaton's farm and played their piano in their dust - covered house after feeding her mother fire and aherbaby of flames was born. The piano sounded better than it did at home...
At the end of her nightmare, Billie Jo brought the Eaton's piano back home, despite the dust. When she got it there, she couldn't play because her hands were swollen lumps, they dripped of pus, they swung from her wrists, and stung with pain.
Whenever Billie Jo's nightmare ended after waking up, the part she dreamt about her hands was true.
