Now, you know how we do photosynthesis to make sugar for food, but there is also something called RESPIRATION. During respiration, cells break down those food molecules, usually sugar, and release the energy they have. Respiration also does not mean breathing. To avoid confusion, this process is often called CELLULAR RESPIRATION.

C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy
(glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy)
Just like in photosynthesis, there are also two steps in respiration.
During Stage 1, a little energy is released. But During Stage 2, a lot of energy is released. This is why mitochondria are sometimes called the POWERHOUSE of the cell.
Animals respire all the time to make energy, which is called ATP. ATP is the main product of respiration. for themselves from what they ate.
Respiration and photosynthesis are very important because of the products they produce. Photosynthesis produces oxygen which animals (including us) use to breathe. Respiration is what everyone uses to make energy for themselves.
We plants do respiration all the time, day and night. But, we ONLY do photosynthesis during the day.
The food chain shows how photosynthesis and respiration are so important to all living life on Earth.
